Database (2021)

Database (2021) is a visual database. Depicted are women* who have been vilified, belittled, questioned and/or a victim of sexism in the media. Women who lost control of their own narrative and legacy due to the media’s monotonous and misogynistic approach to reporting, often building women up to later tear down, in order to maximise profit. Of the UK’s top 24 newspapers and tabloids only four are edited by women, and none are owned by a woman. So far, the piece features 256 women and is printed straight onto newsprint - critiquing the reproductive nature of the press’ tropes. For every image of a woman shown, there are between one to eight articles sourced and referenced when adding them to the database. On top of the hand-transferred printed images, is a screen print of Rupert Murdoch, who has long owned a monopoly of the media and shapes public perception. This project is ongoing. *Anyone who currently identifies, or has previously identified, as a woman, is gender-fluid or has been pigeonholed as a woman by the media.
